Hemp

2019
The project concerns using hemp composite as a more sustainable alternative to plastic. The material consists of 80% hemp and 20% polypropylene and contains some of the same qualities as regular plastic when pressed.

Hemp is a lounge chair made from a shell constrution. The double curvature shell construction uses the materials proporties by creating strength through shape. Only two small forming tools are needed to press the four seperate shells to design for affordable production in the industry. The collar folding backwards does not only make it possible to connect the shells, but it adds strength from top to bottom.

The design proces is based on a lot of material research and experiments. Experimenting with pressure, heat, layers and shape to figure out, which combinations are best suited for the construction of af shell chair.
